Composing Music For Film, Television And Theatre
Revered for it's lyrical depth and sweeping cinematic scope, the music of Grant-Lee Phillips extends beyond the realm of recording artist. For over a decade and a half, the music of
Grant-Lee Phillips has added emotional richness to a diverse range of films and television shows, from Gilmore Girls (where he also appeared as a guest star) to
Roswell, Six Feet Under, House, and Grey's Anatomy, to name a few.
With his band, Grant Lee Buffalo, four major studio recordings in addition to various soundtrack features, live releases, exclusives releases and a box set retrospectives, were released through Slash/Warner Brothers. The extensive repertoire of Grant Lee Buffalo was featured in numerous television and film productions including With Honors, Mad Love, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and Friends. Director Todd Hayne's called upon Phillips to write and record songs for the lead character in his glitter rock-film, Velvet Goldmine. Similar commissions include writing songs for balladeer and love interest in the TV drama, Witchblade. In 1999 Phillips went solo. His catalogue of CDs and songs now outnumber those of his former band. This freedom allowed the prolific Phillips to broaden his work and explore composing for film and television. He started with the film Zigzag. This led to an invitation to the prestigious Sundance Film Composer's Lab where he worked with notable composers Thomas Newman, Rolf Kent, George S. Clinton, Mark Isham and Edward Shearmer. His next scoring project was indie darling, Jane Weinstock's, Easy. The score ranges from introspective acoustic to upbeat rhythmic pieces underscoring the story's playfulness. Easy also features several tracks from Phillips' CD Ladies Love Oracle. More recently Phillips scored the first season of the one hour TV drama, "What about Brian," and Amy Sherman-Palladino's half hour sitcom, "The Return of Jezebel James." In the arena of documentary film, Phillips composed two songs featured in National Geographic's film, Arctic Tale, "Itchin'" a playful reprieve in the film, and "Song Of The North (Beneath the Sun)" closes the thoughtful film with a poignant message of urgency and compassion. Grant-Lee Phillips' recently collaborated with Helios Dance Theater in a modern interpretation of Homer's The Odyssey. The performance entitled, "The Lotus Eaters" show cases Phillips hidden talent for mixing traditional orchestral instrumentation with experimental song formats. The piece premiered in October 2008 at The Cerritos Center for The Performing Arts. Upcoming engagements include The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and The Symphony Space in New York City.
